Similar to LED lighting, EL features an electrochemical light source using phosphor crystals that emits light when powered. EL generates light without heat, does not impair night vision, is highly visible in smoke and fog, and does not have a filament to break. The EL form format is planar, less than 1mm thick, and often flexible.

EL allows for significant versatility and is found in backlighting, linear accent lighting, POP displays, inspection machines, specialty signage, safety systems, ingress and egress path marking, and consumer electronics.
